Destination overview

New Zealand's licensed resort properties are few and geographically spread, which makes them easy to compare directly. The Auckland tower anchors the field, with smaller properties serving the lakes and the South Island cities.

About our reviews

How the reviews are produced

This publication assesses resort hotels across New Zealand's resort cities and publishes the results. Ochantera is editorial rather than commercial — no room is sold here, no commission is earned, and no position in the ranking is for sale.

We keep independence by structure, not by promise. Listings are unpaid, reviews are not shown to properties in advance, and criticisms are not removable at request.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age restriction?

Adults only. You must have reached the age of majority in your own jurisdiction, and 21 where the local standard requires it, to use this site.

How often are reviews updated?

Properties are reassessed when they renovate, change operator, or when reader reports suggest the published score no longer holds.

Can I suggest a correction?

Email [email protected] with what you found. Verified corrections are published and the page's revision date is updated.

Why is my hotel not listed?

This edition covers New Zealand's resort cities only. A property is listed once our editors have completed a full assessment against all six criteria.

What does the score actually mean?

Read the score as a relative position, not a pass mark. The lower-scored properties frequently serve a specific traveller better.

Can I book through this site?

No — Ochantera is a review publication. Availability requests are forwarded to the hotel, and all booking terms are agreed directly with that property.
